Ian Dowman is now an Emeritus Professor inPhotogrammetry and Remote Sensing, University College London (UCL) and has spent most of his career carrying out research into applications of digital aerial and satellite data to mapping. He has been involved in ISPRS for many years and was President from 2008-2012. He is now chair of the International Science Advisory Committee of ISPRS and edits the magazine Geomatics World.

The publication of papers in respected journals is an essential part of a successful academic career. This presentation will explain the essential components of a journal paper and how to write it. It will discuss what is publishable, how to construct an article and how to interact with editors and reviewers. There are a number of important ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ in writing papers and it is important to understand these in order to have a paper accepted: these will be discussed.
